Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)
Filling
- 1 lb ground sausage meat
- 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
- 1 tsp mustard powder
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
Coating
- 1 egg (beaten for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it’s at the right temperature when you’re ready to bake your sausage rolls.
- Roll Out Pastry: Roll out the thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured surface until it is about 1/8 inch thick, giving you a thin, even sheet to work with.
- Prepare Filling: In a bowl, combine the ground sausage meat, finely chopped onion, mustard powder, salt, and pepper, mixing thoroughly to evenly distribute all the ingredients.
- Cut Pastry: Cut the pastry into rectangles approximately 4 by 6 inches in size for individual sausage rolls.
- Fill and Seal: Place a spoonful of the sausage filling along one edge of each pastry rectangle. Fold the pastry over the filling, then press the edges together firmly, sealing with a fork to prevent the filling from escaping during baking.
- Apply Egg Wash: Brush the top of each roll generously with the beaten egg. This will give your sausage rolls a shiny, golden-brown finish once baked.
- Bake: Place the sausage rolls on a lined baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden and the sausage is fully cooked.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow the sausage rolls to cool slightly before serving warm for the best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Make sure the puff pastry is properly thawed for easier handling and better puffing during baking.
- You can customize the filling by adding herbs like sage or thyme for extra flavor.
- Sausage rolls can be frozen before baking; just thaw and bake as instructed when ready.
- Serve with mustard or ketchup for dipping to complement the savory taste.
