Description

A delicious and comforting Cornbread Stuffing with Apples recipe that combines savory cornbread, aromatic onions and celery, and sweet chopped apples, all moistened with flavorful broth. Perfect as a side dish for holiday meals or anytime you want a slightly sweet and savory stuffing.

Ingredients

Scale

Cornbread

  • 18 to 24 oz. prepared cornbread, cut into ½-inch cubes

Vegetables & Fruits

  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 4 stalks of celery, sliced
  • 3 medium apples, chopped

Fats & Seasonings

  • 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 tbsp. butter
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper

Liquids

  • 2 ÂĽ to 2 3/4 cups chicken or vegetable broth

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cornbread Cubes: Cut the prepared cornbread into ½-inch cubes and set aside to dry slightly; this helps prevent sogginess in the stuffing.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sliced celery. Cook until the vegetables are softened and fragrant, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add Apples and Seasoning: Stir in the chopped apples, salt, and black pepper. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes, allowing the apples to soften slightly while mixing well with vegetables.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Place the cornbread cubes into a large mixing bowl. Pour the sautéed vegetable and apple mixture over the cornbread.
  5. Add Broth: Gradually add 2 ÂĽ to 2 3/4 cups of chicken or vegetable broth to the cornbread and vegetable mixture, tossing gently to combine. Use enough broth to moisten the mixture without making it soggy.
  6. Bake the Stuffing: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the stuffing mixture into a greased baking dish and spread evenly. Cover with foil and bake for 25-30 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 10 minutes to develop a slightly crispy top.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale or day-old cornbread for best texture; fresh cornbread can make stuffing mushy.
  • Chicken broth will add richness, while vegetable broth keeps it vegetarian-friendly.
  • Adjust the amount of broth as needed depending on how moist you prefer your stuffing.
  • This stuffing can be prepared a day ahead and refrigerated before baking.
  • For a gluten-free option, ensure the prepared cornbread is made with gluten-free ingredients.
