Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup dry milk powder
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
Fat
- 2 tablespoons fat (butter, shortening, sausage fat, or bacon grease)
To Prepare Gravy
- 3 tablespoons of the prepared gravy mix
- 1 cup water or milk (milk recommended for creamier gravy)
- Optional: browned sausage for sausage gravy
Instructions
- Prepare the Dry Mix: In a large bowl, combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 cup dry milk powder, 1/4 cup cornstarch, 1 tablespoon ground black pepper, 1 tablespoon salt, 2 teaspoons onion powder, and 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning. Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute all ingredients.
- Store the Mix: Transfer the dry gravy mix to an airtight container or jar and store it in a cool, dry place until ready to use.
- Make the Gravy: To prepare the gravy, heat 2 tablespoons of your chosen fat (butter, shortening, sausage fat, or bacon grease) in a skillet over medium heat until melted and hot.
- Mix the Gravy Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together 3 tablespoons of the gravy mix with 1 cup of water or milk for creamier texture. Add this mixture slowly to the hot fat in the skillet while whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
- Cook the Gravy: Continue to cook and stir the gravy over medium heat until it thickens and comes to a simmer, about 3-5 minutes. Adjust the consistency by adding more liquid or mix as desired.
- Optional Sausage Gravy: For sausage gravy, brown ground sausage in the skillet before adding the fat, then proceed with adding the gravy mix and liquid to the pan with the cooked sausage, stirring well to combine.
Notes
- You can use different fats such as butter, shortening, or bacon grease to vary the flavor of the gravy.
- Storing the dry mix in a sealed container ensures freshness for several weeks.
- Milk creates a richer and creamier gravy compared to water.
- Adjust seasonings to taste, especially salt and pepper, based on your preference.
- Browned sausage adds heartiness and additional flavor for a traditional sausage gravy.
