Description
A comforting and creamy baked dish featuring tender boneless chicken breasts topped with Swiss cheese, smothered in a luscious cream of chicken soup and Chardonnay sauce, and finished with a crispy herbed stuffing topping. Perfect for an easy weeknight dinner or family gathering.
Ingredients
Scale
Chicken and Cheese
- 6 large boneless skinless chicken breasts
- 6 slices good quality Swiss cheese
Sauce
- 1 (10 3/4 oz) can cream of chicken soup
- 1 cup Chardonnay wine
Topping
- 1 1/2 cups boxed herbed stuffing mix (or croutons or seasoned breadcrumbs as alternatives)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the chicken dish.
- Prepare the chicken: Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray. Lay the chicken breasts evenly on the bottom of the dish. Place one slice of Swiss cheese on top of each chicken breast, ensuring they are covered nicely with cheese.
- Mix the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the cream of chicken soup and Chardonnay until the mixture is smooth and well combined, creating a rich and flavorful sauce for the chicken.
- Assemble the dish: Pour the sauce evenly over the chicken breasts and cheese in the baking dish. Then, sprinkle the dry herbed stuffing mix evenly on top to form a crust that will become golden and crispy while baking.
- Bake the chicken: Cover the baking dish with foil to keep moisture in and bake for 40 minutes. Afterward, remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 20 minutes or until the stuffing topping is golden brown and the chicken is fully cooked through. Check for doneness before serving.
- Serve and enjoy: Spoon any remaining wine sauce and stuffing mixture from the dish over the chicken slices. Serve warm and enjoy your creamy Swiss chicken bake.
Notes
- Use a good quality Swiss cheese for the best flavor and meltability.
- Chardonnay wine adds depth to the sauce; if unavailable, a dry white wine or chicken broth can be substituted.
- Check internal chicken temperature to ensure it reaches 165°F (74°C) for safe consumption.
- You can substitute herbed stuffing mix with croutons or seasoned breadcrumbs for a different texture and flavor.
- Leftovers store well in the refrigerator and can be reheated gently in the oven or microwave.
