Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 cup long-grain white rice
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cups beef broth (or chicken broth)
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized, about 15 minutes.
- Toast the Rice: Add the rice to the saucepan with the onions and stir to coat the grains in butter. Cook for 2-3 minutes until slightly toasted.
- Simmer: Pour in the beef broth, garlic powder, and thyme. Stir well, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 18-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
- Finish & Serve: Remove from heat and fluff the rice with a fork. Stir in Parmesan cheese if desired. Season with additional salt and pepper to taste.
- Garnish: Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm.
Notes
- Use beef broth for a richer flavor, or chicken broth as a lighter alternative.
- Caramelizing the onions slowly is key to develop deep, sweet flavors.
- Parmesan cheese is optional but adds a nice umami note to the dish.
- Make sure to simmer covered to allow the rice to cook evenly and absorb the broth.
- Garnish with fresh parsley right before serving to add color and freshness.
