Description

This French Onion Butter Rice recipe combines the rich, caramelized flavors of golden onions with buttery, fluffy rice for a comforting and flavorful side dish. Enhanced with aromatic herbs and optional Parmesan cheese, this easy stovetop recipe brings a gourmet touch to your meal in just 40 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth (or chicken broth)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized, about 15 minutes.
  2. Toast the Rice: Add the rice to the saucepan with the onions and stir to coat the grains in butter. Cook for 2-3 minutes until slightly toasted.
  3. Simmer: Pour in the beef broth, garlic powder, and thyme. Stir well, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 18-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
  4. Finish & Serve: Remove from heat and fluff the rice with a fork. Stir in Parmesan cheese if desired. Season with additional salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Garnish: Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use beef broth for a richer flavor, or chicken broth as a lighter alternative.
  • Caramelizing the onions slowly is key to develop deep, sweet flavors.
  • Parmesan cheese is optional but adds a nice umami note to the dish.
  • Make sure to simmer covered to allow the rice to cook evenly and absorb the broth.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley right before serving to add color and freshness.
