Description

French Onion Chicken is a delicious twist on a classic dish, combining the rich flavors of French onion soup with tender, juicy chicken. Caramelized onions, melty cheese, and savory broth come together to create a comforting and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the French Onion Sauce:

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Season chicken breasts with salt and pepper. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add chicken and cook until browned on both sides, about 5 minutes per side. Remove chicken from skillet and set aside.
  2. Make the French Onion Sauce: In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized, about 20 minutes. Add garlic and cook for an additional minute. Sprinkle flour over the onions and cook for another minute. Slowly pour in beef broth, stirring constantly. Add thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook until the sauce has thickened.
  3. Assemble the Dish: Return the chicken to the skillet, spooning the French onion sauce over each breast. Top with shredded Gruyere cheese. Cover and cook until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

  • This dish pairs well with crusty bread or over a bed of mashed potatoes.
  • For a richer flavor, you can add a splash of white wine to the French onion sauce.
