Description

Enjoy the smoky flavors of grilled sausage nestled in a soft hoagie roll, topped with savory sautéed peppers and onions. This grilled sausage sandwich is a perfect choice for a summer cookout or a quick weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Italian Sausage:

  • 4 Italian sausage links (mild or hot)

Sautéed Peppers and Onions:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 bell peppers (one red, one yellow, sliced)
  • 1 large yellow onion (sliced)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Additional:

  • 4 hoagie or sausage rolls
  • Optional condiments (mustard, mayonnaise, or melted provolone cheese)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Grill: Preheat the grill to medium heat.
  2. Grill the Sausages: Grill the sausages for 12–15 minutes, turning occasionally, until fully cooked and nicely charred on the outside.
  3. Sauté Peppers and Onions: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced peppers and onions, then season with oregano, salt, and pepper. Sauté for 10–12 minutes until the vegetables are soft and slightly caramelized.
  4. Toast the Rolls: Toast the rolls on the grill during the last 2–3 minutes of cooking.
  5. Assemble the Sandwiches: Place each sausage in a roll and top generously with the sautéed peppers and onions. Add condiments or cheese if desired.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, deglaze the pepper and onion pan with a splash of balsamic vinegar or white wine.
  • You can substitute chicken sausage or plant-based sausage to suit dietary needs.
