Description

This Honey Garlic Butter Shrimp & Broccoli recipe is a quick and flavorful weeknight meal that combines tender shrimp and crisp broccoli coated in a sweet and savory honey garlic butter sauce. Ready in just 20 minutes, it features a perfect balance of honey’s natural sweetness, fresh garlic and ginger, a hint of red pepper flakes for subtle heat, and buttery richness. Ideal for serving over rice or pasta, this dish is both satisfying and easy to prepare with simple ingredients and stovetop cooking.

Ingredients

Scale

Sauce

  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled, deveined, and tails removed if desired
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups chopped broccoli
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the honey, low sodium soy sauce, fresh grated ginger, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes until well combined to create a flavorful sauce base.
  2. Marinate the shrimp: Place the peeled and deveined shrimp in a bowl, add one-third of the prepared sauce, and toss to coat thoroughly. Let the shrimp marinate for at least 30 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  3. Thicken the sauce: Mix the cornstarch into the remaining two-thirds of the sauce and set aside. This will be used later to thicken the sauce during cooking.
  4. Cook the broccoli: Heat a skillet or wok over high heat and add the olive oil. Add the chopped broccoli, season with salt and pepper, and cook for 5 to 6 minutes until the broccoli is tender yet crisp. Remove broccoli from the skillet and set aside.
  5. Cook the shrimp: In the same skillet, add the butter and the marinated shrimp (discard any leftover marinade in the bowl). Cook the shrimp for about 2 minutes on each side until they turn pink and are opaque throughout.
  6. Combine and simmer: Pour in the reserved sauce mixture with cornstarch into the skillet with the shrimp, bringing it to a low to medium simmer. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes until the sauce thickens to a glossy consistency.
  7. Add broccoli and serve: Return the cooked broccoli to the skillet and toss everything together to coat well and heat through. Serve immediately, ideally over rice or pasta for a complete meal.

Notes

  • For best flavor, marinate the shrimp for at least 30 minutes but no longer than 1 hour to avoid texture changes.
  • If you prefer less spice, reduce or omit the red pepper flakes.
  • You can substitute the broccoli with other vegetables like snap peas or bell peppers depending on preference.
  • Adjust salt accordingly since soy sauce adds saltiness.
  • Use fresh shrimp for the best taste, but frozen shrimp thawed properly also works well.
