Description

These Mini Jalapeno Popper Egg Rolls are a crispy, flavorful appetizer that combines creamy cheese, spicy jalapenos, and crispy bacon wrapped in a delicate wonton wrapper. Perfect for parties or game day, they fry up golden brown and are best served hot with a tangy dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 4-6 strips bacon, cooked and chopped
  • 3-5 jalapenos, seeded and diced
  • 2 green onions, finely sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Wrapper and Frying

  • Wonton wrappers (around 22)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped bacon, diced jalapenos, sliced green onions, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until all ingredients are well incorporated and creamy.
  2. Assemble the egg rolls: Lay one wonton wrapper flat on a clean surface. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture into the center of the wrapper.
  3. Fold the wrappers: Moisten the edges of the wrapper with a little water to help seal. Fold the bottom corner over the filling, fold in the sides towards the center, then roll tightly upwards like a burrito. Press the edges to seal completely to prevent leaking during frying.
  4. Repeat wrapping: Continue assembling the remaining wonton wrappers with the filling mixture until all are used.
  5. Heat the oil: In a large skillet or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Ensure there is enough oil for the egg rolls to float and cook evenly.
  6. Fry the egg rolls: Carefully place the prepared egg rolls into the hot oil in batches, avoiding overcrowding. Fry for 2-3 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides.
  7. Drain and serve: Remove the fried egg rolls and drain on paper towels to absorb excess oil. Serve immediately while hot with your choice of dipping sauce such as ranch or sweet chili sauce.

Notes

  • To reduce spice, remove all seeds from jalapenos or substitute with milder peppers.
  • Make sure the cream cheese is fully softened for easier mixing and spreading.
  • Seal the wonton wrappers tightly to avoid filling oozing out during frying.
  • Maintain oil temperature to ensure even cooking and prevent greasiness.
  • These egg rolls can be prepared ahead of time and frozen before frying; just fry directly from frozen, adding an extra minute or two to the cook time.
