Description

This Mushroom Swiss Patty Melt is the ultimate breakfast choice, combining juicy seasoned beef patties, sautéed mushrooms and onions, and melted Swiss cheese between buttery slices of rye or sourdough bread. Cooked on the stovetop until golden and crispy, this classic American diner-style sandwich is rich, flavorful, and perfect for a hearty morning meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Beef Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

For the Sautéed Vegetables

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced

For the Sandwich

  • 8 slices rye or sourdough bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a bowl, gently mix the ground beef with salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce until just combined. Shape the mixture into four thin oval patties, ensuring even thickness for consistent cooking.
  2. Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Place the patties in the hot skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, or until fully cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Sauté the Mushrooms and Onions: In the same skillet, add olive oil and sauté the sliced mushrooms and onions over medium heat. Cook until they become soft and caramelized, about 6 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
  4. Prepare the Bread: Wipe out the skillet if needed and reduce heat to medium. Butter one side of each bread slice evenly. This buttered side will help achieve a golden, crispy texture when cooking the sandwich.
  5. Assemble the Patty Melts: Place a slice of bread butter-side down on the skillet. Layer with one slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked beef patty, a generous amount of sautéed mushrooms and onions, another slice of Swiss cheese, and top with another bread slice butter-side up.
  6. Grill the Sandwiches: Cook each assembled sandwich for 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted completely.
  7. Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and serve hot. Enjoy immediately for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • For a breakfast twist, add a fried egg inside the sandwich before grilling to add extra richness.
  • Using a cast iron skillet provides the best browning and even heat distribution.
  • Patties can be cooked ahead of time and reheated for quick assembly on busy mornings.
