Description

This Spicy Southern Shrimp Grits recipe combines creamy stone-ground grits with perfectly seasoned shrimp for a delicious and comforting meal with a kick of spice.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Grits:

  • 1 cup stone-ground grits
  • 4 cups water or chicken broth
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For the Shrimp:

  • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For Garnish:

  • 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons chopped green onions
  • Hot sauce (optional, to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Grits: In a medium saucepan, bring water or chicken broth to a boil. Stir in the grits and cook until thick and creamy. Stir in cheese, cream, and butter. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. Cook the Bacon: In a skillet, cook bacon until crispy. Set aside. Sauté onion and garlic in the skillet.
  3. Cook the Shrimp: Season shrimp and cook in the skillet until pink and opaque. Stir in lemon juice and butter.
  4. Serve: Spoon cheesy grits into bowls, top with shrimp mixture, bacon, and green onions. Add hot sauce if desired.

Notes

  • You can adjust the spice level by reducing cayenne and red pepper flakes.
  • For extra flavor, use a mixture of milk and broth for the grits.
  • Best served immediately while hot and creamy.
